The Macosxhints.com article Use Safari window shortcuts from the address bar points out that you can use the same shortcuts you use for opening links into new tabs in the address bar and the Google search box. The article has more detail, or you can visit Safari’s Preferences and look at the Tabs section.

And while we’re on keyboard shortcuts, certain applications, such as Safari and TextEdit, allow you to type part of a word and then hold down Option and Escape to call up a pick list of possible words. Use the space bar to accept your chosen completion.
