I recently picked up a second hand DVD called Girlfight. You’d suppose by the title that this would be absolute junk but actually it’s a pretty good movie. The plot wouldn’t win any prizes for novelty: poor Latina from New York wants to take up boxing. Her father’s against it. She makes her way with grit and determination, overcoming obstacles. The music’s compelling though with its flamenco rhythms and the lead actor, Michelle Rodriguez, does a great job as a brooding, determined young woman with the discipline to work for her goal and ignore peer pressure and ridicule. This movie will be one I keep and watch from time to time.
