New Zealand’s near neighbour Niue has a population barely over 2,000. In fact, it’s likely that more Niueans live in New Zealand. Now, as happens at this time of year, there has been a cyclone and it seems Niue is utterly devastated.
Every time I’m tempted think though that such a place is just too small and unsustainable I try to remember that from our lofty height of a population of 4 million that might seem the case. From another perspective our entire population doesn’t rank against any mid-size city in many countries.
So, should New Zealand just pack up and move? Or maybe we should be annexed to Australia? Not likely! These issues of population, sustainability and sovereignty are not easily resolved.
