OK, my cable modem’s been down for at least 42 hours now. After about an hour on the phone to several Helpdesk staff it seems I’m not the only one in this area with a problem and a technician will be looking at the “node”. If it isn’t fixed within another three or four hours they may contact me and give me a new modem. I don’t really care that much how it’s fixed, though a new modem would be nice. I figure after 4 years service this one could be getting a bit tired. This all means that Plan B now takes effect, so I’m heading out downtown soon to sit in a cafe with wireless and do some actual work.

This retreat to the world of dial-up is a useful (though extraordinarily irritating) reminder about just how slow and frustrating email, the web and everything else can be.
