They say ignorance of the law is no defence, but who could know that in New Zealand we would have sheer lunacy for a law? Industry warns of legal CD piracy tells us that in New Zealand it is at present not legal for someone who owns a legitimately obtained CD to make one copy for their own private use. Under the widely flouted current law, all copying, even that for personal listening, is banned. Apparently though a law change is soon to bring some sanity to this situation.

Meantime the music industry is hysterical and making absolute idiot statements, including such phrases as “open the floodgates” to unrestricted piracy and taking away people’s rights to earn a living, and that’s horrendous and even More blank CDs are now sold in New Zealand than pre-recorded discs.

And of course it’s “obvious”that the only reason anyone would buy a blank CD is to pirate music. No-one would ever use a blank CD for backing up their files or for passing a Word document to another user. No. Really!
