Warship in the harbour. Speaker of the House, Jonathan Hunt, today described New Zealand as the world’s oldest democracy as he attended a ceremony to mark 150 years since the first meeting of Parliament on 24 May 1854. [Via Stuff]

Mr Hunt described as entirely appropriate the celebration of “the world’s oldest democracy”, words he said he chose deliberately. He said New Zealand in 1893 became the first country to give women the vote, having given its indigenous people representation in Parliament 23 years earlier.

Which probably explains the warship in the harbour today.
