A young Mars. Back in late March my friend Dianne brought home two Burmese kittens and called them Mercury and Mars. The photo here shows Mars. There’s a larger version if you click the thumbnail.

Unfortunately Mars disappeared on Saturday night and turned up this morning on the driveway where someone had placed him out of the way. The poor little mite was already stiff, but didn’t seem injured. There was no evidence of a car accident or other injury — it’s a bit of a mystery what happened to him. Maybe his heart was weak and he just died. We’ll never know, but he’s now safely interred in the garden. It’s always sad to lose a pet.

Update 4 November: just to be clear, Mars was Dianne’s cat. Thanks to those who expressed their condolences to me. My three cats are doing just fine, though with Guy Fawkes fireworks night tomorrow they’ll be confined to the house for a while.
