Yesterday I downloaded and installed PHP and MYSQL. Both installs went well, but somehow my MySQL installation went terribly wrong and I locked myself out of it totally. Then I spent hours trying all kinds of solutions, including a reinstall or two, resetting permissions, logging in as the root user of the machine and editing things, and various suggestions from other websites. All I achieved was to make matters worse and I had visions of needing to reformat the Powerbook before I could make it work.

Today I spotted Derek Miller’s Useful resources if you have a new Mac, including WebServerX Kit — Apache 2, PHP, and MySQL in one convenient installer. I didn’t need Apache or PHP, but at my wits end I thought I’d give the Installer a try. Problem solved! [Note to self: send a donation once this end-of-tax-year money drought has passed.]
