For some reason I have never paid much attention to the Otari-Wilton’s Bush in Wellington. I’ve visited once or twice, strolled around the area beside the carpark and with my usual knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, completely overlooked the information centre, the canopy walkway and the extensive grounds filled with native plants.
The other day though I was trying to take photos of the tui in a tree beside the neighbour’s house when they mentioned they’d seen many tui at Wilton’s Bush. Today I took an hour out and went up there to see for myself.
It’s a beautiful place with plenty of scope for wandering, on the flat or up and down the slopes. A family of 4 tui were close to the canopy walkway, but my photos didn’t work out. On the other hand, a Kereru, or native wood pigeon, was happy to pose for me, and some dragonflies on a pond were similarly obliging. I have a few photos online.
