A couple of weeks ago I wiped my hard drive and installed Tiger, then copied across my data, software etc. I was unwell at the time and my brain was really just porridge. Anyway, since then I’ve been unable to backup using RSyncX. The software would start up, I’d enter the settings and press Go and then nothing would happen.
I’ve been searching, looking for updates, checking to see if others were reporting problems. No joy. I had come across mention of Tiger changing how rsync functions and attributed the problem to that.
I’ve started exploring other backup possibilities. One program I tried dumped over 1,000 files in the Trash. I rescued them in case it was an error, but they don’t seem to have been needed. It made me quite nervous though.
Earlier today I downloaded another program and this evening went in search of it in my Downloads folder to try it out. On the way past I noticed the original compressed RSyncX download, expanded it and realised it was an installer. A lightbulb fired and I realised I’d probably just copied the RSyncX program across at install time and had left behind some crucial files. I ran the installer, started up the software and backed up with customary ease.
I’ve been doing Mac support for years now. How can it be that such a simple step as reinstalling the software had escaped me? I’m putting it down to the brain-fog of the last couple of weeks.
