Back in June I wrote about how I hate banks: How long should a password be?. Almost two years after first signing up for Google AdSense I’ve received sufficient clicks that Google sent me a cheque which arrived the other day. Given that it was in US dollars I was nervous about how I’d manage to deposit it in an account. I envisioned horrendous fees which would probably reduce the bankable amount to a mere fraction.

Nevertheless, I was depositing other cheques today in the ASB / Bank Direct (which, for overseas readers, is sort of the same bank, but different). The teller was very friendly and helpful and informed me that the fee for this cheque in foreign currency was a mere 5 cents, imposed by the government. A few moments later, after I’d presented my EFTPOS card in lieu of a deposit slip, it was all sorted. Yes! For once, I have something nice to say about banks!
