NewsGator’s acquisition of NetNewsWire was rather a surprise this morning. I’ve said many times before how much I like NetNewsWire and Brent Simmons’ approach to development. It seems that:

Existing NetNewsWire full-version customers will get a free 2-year premium subscription to NewsGator Online. This subscription will include access to NewsGator’s online platform, including synchronization with NetNewsWire and other premium features. This will also include all updates to NetNewsWire for two years. All this will be available as of the next release of NetNewsWire.

Although I’d never heard of NewsGator before, they say this:

The NewsGator Online platform provides a highly integrated and synchronized reading/viewing experience across multiple devices, including the web, mobile phones, televisions, and e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook. The recent FeedDemon acquisition extended this to the Windows desktop, and now with NetNewsWire, the premier RSS reader for Mac OS X, the platform extends to the Mac desktop as well.

All of which appears to be saying that you can read RSS feeds with your browser and synchronise those feeds to software such as NetNewsWire (soon). I guess that’s handy for people who jump around from one computer to another. Not so much use to me right now, but then I expect NetNewsWire to keep working just fine.
