As I stepped into the shower yesterday Kim Hill was interviewing Ashley Highfield, the BBC’s director of new media and technology. Tomorrow night I’m off to hear him at the Karajoz Great Blend so was particularly interested to hear the interview. Not that I did, being in the shower and all, and given the interview was half over before I even knew it was on.
So later in the day I ferreted round the Radio New Zealand website, set my media preferences to MP3 and clicked on the link to listen to the interview. [Note: RadioNZ are making shows available for only a few weeks — by the time you read this all reference to it may have vanished.]
Now, I didn’t want to actually listen to the show at that particular moment so once iTunes had popped open and started to play I stopped it again, clicked on the title and chose Get Info from the File menu. That allowed me to ‘Edit’ the URL and copy it to Interarchy, my FTP software, which then downloaded the file and automatically fed it to iTunes. Then I chose Get Info on that track and renamed it with information from the web page.
Whew! that’s quite a long and involved process just to be able to listen later, but it does work. Of course, if Radio NZ made themed podcasts available then everything would be so much simpler. I don’t want politics, cooking, book of the week and all the other junk associated with the branded ‘shows’; give me the technology, science, astronomy and sci-fi.
Maybe at some point I’ll see if I can develop an Applescript to do all the hard work for me. There are (parts of) several shows I’d be keen to listen to: Digital Life (Wednesdays), This Way Up (Saturdays), Our Changing World (Thursdays) and perhaps others. I’m certainly not listening to live radio any more — haven’t done so for a while, except for when I’m in the shower (can’t hear much) or driving (random snippets).
