I don’t know whether I tangled up my Airport Express or it got itself confused (I suspect it was me), but in any case the information that helped me sort it out was at Macworld’s Mac 911:

Macworld: Mac 911: Resetting the AirPort Express: … it’s only one of three ways to reset the device (and each variety of reset does something a bit different). … The three reset types are soft, hard, and factory default.
