Well, my order’s in for the new MacBook Pro. I’ve ordered the 15.4-inch: 1.83GHz model with as much RAM as it can take. That looks like the 2Gb I currently have, although I would have liked more. It doesn’t have a Firewire 800 port, but it does have the Firewire 400 and a couple of [...]

Well, my order’s in for the new MacBook Pro. I’ve ordered the 15.4-inch: 1.83GHz model with as much RAM as it can take. That looks like the 2Gb I currently have, although I would have liked more. It doesn’t have a Firewire 800 port, but it does have the Firewire 400 and a couple of USB 2 ports.

Also gone is the PCMCIA card slot that I use to carry my Compact Flash card adapter. It’s been replaced with a new slot called an Express Card. I guess I’ll resort to my older USB card reader until a new option turns up.

Having just a few days ago seen our dog get tangled up in the power cord for my old Titanium Powerbook (disaster was averted) the new magnetic power cord attachment is very welcome.

Innovative right down to the power cord: The new power adapter with MagSafe connector is just that: a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, tripping over a power cord won’t send MacBook Pro flying off a table or desk; the cord simply breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the lough or the system. As an added nicety, this means less wear on the connectors.

I did buy an iSight camera last year but haven’t had time to really use it much. I did have plans for maybe connecting it to my Mac Mini, but even the summer holiday hasn’t brought that into effect. The new MacBook has an iSight built-in.

Better, brighter screen, much faster performance (4 to 5 times as fast) … it seems Apple have outdone themselves with this new model.
