These days when telemarketers call I try to remember to ask them how they got my number and to add me to a do not call list before telling them I’m not interested. I don’t always remember that though. So today, when Geekzone asked:

When will New Zealand get a Do Not Call Register? There is a Do Not Call Register in the U.S. and now a Do Not Call Register in Australia. When are we going to have it here?

I was interested to find the answer was in the comments:

The Name Removal Service has been set up by the Marketing Association (previously the DMA) in order to decrease the number of unwanted, unsolicited phone calls, mailings and faxes consumers receive from organisations.  It is a free service offered to New Zealand consumers.”

I’ve added my details. We’ll see what happens.

Unfortunately, the Do Not Call register in the U.S. does not prevent certain parties from calling, including organizations supposedly doing surveys and nonprofit organizations looking for donations. So now all the marketers are really doing surveys. And they won’t stop calling until you ask them to remove you from THEIR no-call list. Extremely annoying and frustrating!
