Just had an email from an Internet acquaintance concerned about my dropping out of tomorrow’s Barcamp. That’s one of the things I love about the Internet. This person happens to be local, but I know I have a worldwide network of friends and acquaintance. It’s so cool.
I don’t recall exactly which year I joined my first mailing list — I think it was before POP email came to Wellington — maybe about 1992. Anway, about the first thing I ever wrote to a mailing list was that it was my birthday. Instantly birthday wishes arrived from all over the world. I was quite blown away!
Oh, and it was all down to the Americans: they’re so good at that kind of thing. I see it all the time on mailing lists, where someone mentions they’re having an off day and at once various people send their good thoughts, where we Kiwis will just think it.

That’s because you are so great. I consider myself an Internet friend of yours, and after watching you in action on the Internet for some time, I do not hesitate to invite you into my home if you ever travel my way.
