After writing this post on Oddity 59 — Fish and Chips in Wellington:

The problem is, the Best Fish Guide assigns fish to one of 3 categories. The rankings reflect the state of each fishery from Green (Best choice), to Amber (Concerns), to Red (Worst choice). The Green column is empty. But how to remember which is the least worst choice of fish to buy? … I’m finding ways to transfer the names of some of the ‘amber’ fish to my cellphone or iPod touch, as I generally have them with me.

I did some copy, paste and sorting from Forest and Bird’s Best Fish Guide to create a semicolon separated ranked list of fish I should choose:

Kina; Anchovy; Pilchard; Sprats; Blue mackerel; Skipjack tuna; Garfish; Yellow-eyed mullet; Cockles; Kahawai; Rock lobster/Crayfish; Blue moki; Blue cod; Kingfish/Yellowtail; Frostfish; John dory; Packhorse lobster/Crayfish; Grey mullet; Trevally; Albacore tuna; Red cod; Tarakihi; Bluenose; Paddle crabs; Silver warehou; Red gurnard; Paua; Butterfish/Greenbone; White warehou.

Then I created a ‘Fish Guide’ entry in my Address Book and pasted that list into the Notes field. After synchronising the iPod touch I have a handy list to refer to, under Addresses on the iPod.
