“Uh oh. There’s something wrong here: why does the video podcast not have video?”
That may be a question you’ve asked if you’ve tried to watch a video podcast on your iPod touch (or perhaps other iPods). I asked it the first couple of times I tried to watch a video podcast. But it turned out that while I was trying to view a video podcast, I should have been viewing a video podcast: it’s all a matter of which menu you choose — you need Videos > Podcasts, not Music > Podcasts.
That may look obvious, when you see it here, but Podcasts is the main category for both audio and video that I subscribe to in iTunes. Call up Music > Podcasts on the iPod touch and the iTunes Podcasts listing is replicated, containing both audio and video podcasts. Try to watch a video from here though, and all you see is the static cover art.
That’s pretty misleading, and an easy mistake to make.

I’ve also made this mistake — more than a few times — on my 5G video iPod. Always when I’m trying to show someone how cool and clear the video is.
Wow, No wonder it sometimes worked for me and then other times it didn’t show video. I feel so silly
oh, i figured it out..haha thanks..i searched this up on google :d
so how do you play video podcasts on the ipod touch exactly? Because the only place i can find podcasts on my ipod is through music.
Go to the Start screen of the iPod and locate the Videos icon. Tap it. There are your video podcasts, plus other videos you have available.
My Videos icon is on the strip at the bottom, between Music and Photos.
Here’s my issue – I don’t have a podcasts tab on my videos menu. When I go to video, I just see the movies I have.
So I guess this means my video podcasts are useless?
You are so right, this is so confusing, thanks so much for your post, I found it on Google and it helped me soooo much. I just realized that going to Podcasts is NOT HOW to watch the podcast, you need to go to the Video area of your iPod. The fact the video podcasts show up in both places (Music:podcasts) and (Videos) is BAD, very confusing! Thanks for your help!
oh yeah….i figured that out after a while. turns out the podcasts i had weren’t even video podcasts. thanks anyway, though miraz.
Thanks for this post. I just got my iPod Touch and this had been really bugging me.
Who’d have thought going into podcasts would be the wrong way to watch a podcast…
Thanks Alan.
Crazy as it seems, even though I *know* this I *still* make the mistake more often than I’d really care to admit….
I have downloaded some (video – ‘I think’) podcasts from the iTunesStore and sync them to my Ipod but thet didnt appear in the Video app, but only in the Music app.
- Is this just a music podcast or is there something wrong?-
It sounds like they are just audio podcasts. Video podcasts show a tiny TV screen icon in the list in iTunes.
For example, I have the Apple Quick Tips podcast. The latest episode as I write is Easy Photo Edits. To the right of those words is a small rectangle with a ‘foot’. That shows it’s a video podcast.
STUPID place to put these !!!
MUSIC>MORE (bottom Right)>Podcast
Interesting. I definately have a problem. A couple of video podcasts I downloaded to my iPod touch from iTunes have NOT appeared in my “videos” list. They are ONLY visible in my music->podcasts list. If I try play them from there, the iPod hangs. What’s up with that?
AnthonyH: I’d guess it’s a format problem. Check that they are in the correct format for iPod video.
iPod video formats are listed at the bottom of:

Nice… solved me a problem… Thanks!
Thanks to you soooohelpful people! I found the video podcasts right at the bottom of the 20-0r-so videos I have put on the iPod Touch. I would never have found them without reading your ideas.

I’m glad this Post helped you out, Malcolm.
Thanks to all of you that helped, especially Miraz, who brought up the fact that there should be a little TV icon beside video podcasts. I had downloaded podcasts thinkning that they were video ones, but then went looking especially for ones with the TV icon beside them, and realized what I had downloaded were simply audio podcasts. Thanks again for the help!
Hey Noel. Glad to help.
Sometimes it’s the really little things that matter.
