Back in December 2007 I was wondering: MoneyWorks or Xero? An accounting quandary. Recently I did some work, helping Rod Drury with his WordPress blog, and in return Rod offered me a good deal on Xero. I took him up on that, and with two weeks to go before the start of a new financial year, I’ve now signed up.

Xero is an online accounting system designed for small businesses and their advisers. It’s simple, smart and secure.

I’m looking forward to automatic imports of banking data, and my accountant being able to log in remotely and do what’s necessary.

It’ll also be cool having my accounts divorced from a single machine, so I can log in from anywhere to find or record information.

Next step is getting set up, but luckily my accounts person can sort that out — while I can issue invoices with reasonable accuracy, I tend to do a rather poor job of the other parts of handling accounts.

Having declared the deal I have, I want to say that any comments I make about Xero in future will be my honest opinions.

That’s kind of redundant — all comments I make on this blog about products are my honest opinions. I seldom or never receive freebies or deals, but if I do, I still offer my honest thoughts.

If Xero should turn out to suck, I’ll let you know.
