Whew, I thought my 15 month old AppleTV was broken. Although I’d just been playing iTunes through it, when I went to check for the software update I knew to be available all my Remote did was to cause the LED on the front to flash amber when I pressed any button.

I restarted the AppleTV a couple of times, and tried another Remote. Still no joy. However Googling quickly brought me to the fix — Apple TV: Remote causes LED to flash amber:

A paired remote that causes Apple TV’s LED (light) to flash amber when used could have been accidentally disabled. For example, this can occur if the Menu and Play/Pause buttons were depressed for at least 5 seconds.

To re-enable the remote:

  • Unpair the remote by holding down the Previous/Rewind and Menu buttons for 6 seconds (this can be done using any Apple remote).
  • Then pair the remote by simultaneously holding down the Next/Fast-Forward and Menu buttons for 6 seconds.

Hooray. No expensive repairs or replacements required.
