A Vimeo experiment

In December 2008 I visited the Honolulu Zoo. I think the animals that left the most lasting impression on me were the Galapagos Tortoises. They are huge. While there I recorded a brief clip with my new Flip Mino video camera. The embedded clip below is an experiment in using Vimeo on a WordPress blog.

How is Vimeo different from YouTube? Looking at the source code, the video was added using an object element, which is basically what YouTube does. I looked at the Vimeo home page and it is certainly a cleaner looking site than YouTube, but I couldn’t see much basic difference in what they are doing. Not that I’m arguing in favor of YouTube, I’m just trying to figure out if they are doing something different at Vimeo.

I haven’t looked very hard at the two to compare. I’ve noticed that some bloggers and video podcasters I respect are using Vimeo so wanted to just give it a whirl.

I was interested particularly because a client was asking about putting videos on a new blog they are creating. They have a need to restrict who sees the videos, and Vimeo does offer privacy settings. I’m not sure if YouTube does…
