WordCamp New Zealand

WordCamp New Zealand: 8-9 August 2009, in Wellington. Should I speak?

I’ve long used WordPress, recommended it to others, and helped clients with their WordPress websites.

In 2006 Maria Langer and I co-authored WordPress 2 Visual Quickstart Guide — a 300 page book for people either using a hosted WordPress.com blog, or using WordPress on their own server.

While our book is now 3 years old, it still provides a lot of valuable information, by the way.

In 2007 and 2008 I contributed a series of around 15 articles on Customizing WordPress at the Informit website. And I sometimes write about WordPress on this blog too.

Now WordCamp New Zealand has arrived:

WordCamp NZ (09) is the first annual conference for WordPress publishers, designers and developers based in New Zealand. It combines informal presentations with debate and discussion on the latest developments in the global WordPress community.

WordCamp NZ is to be held on the weekend of 8-9 August 2009.

WordCamp NZ takes place in Wellington, the capital city of Wellington.

The venue is the Mt Victoria Bowling Club, situated near the city centre and minutes away from the dining and entertainment centres. Facilities include wifi access and exceptional meeting room facilities.

The keynote speaker alone, should be worth turning up for:

Best known as the founding developer of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg will be giving the keynote presentation at WordCamp New Zealand.

Now I have a problem: should I offer to be a speaker, and if so, what should I speak about?

Over the last decade or more I’ve contributed a lot to various community and voluntary activities, sometimes, foolishly, to the detriment of my own business.

By the end of 2008 I found I was quite burned out. I’d had a few busy years of my own, and my partner was in a very busy, sometimes high-pressure job too.

This year I’m lying low. I’ve withdrawn from all unpaid and volunteer work, and I’m trying to take things a bit easier while building my own MacTips and KnowIt brands, even while I start up a new venture, Run Spot Run, and its companion, the barely formed The Dog Lobby.

All of those websites use WordPress, by the way.

As I contemplate WordCamp I shall for sure sign up to attend, but I just can’t think of what I might offer to speak on. I’m no PHP or MySQL expert. I’ve withdrawn from setting up sites for other people. I’m focused at the moment on writing.

If you’d like to see me speak the NZ WordCamp please do leave a Comment, and suggest what you’d like to hear about from me.

Training and documentation look like good areas to talk about at wordcamp.

Life experience and actually having something to say are sometimes in short supply. I wonder if there is a good way to do lifehacks for bloggers that would be useful?
