400% increase in images showing abuse of kids

Fix the problem; don’t just filter the websites.

There are many things in the world I find inconceivable. Unfortunately that doesn’t stop them being true. One of those things is the sexual abuse of children.

Another is that so many people choose to view images of the sexual abuse of children.

The number of images and the seriousness of the abuse are both growing, according to the United Nations:

More than 4 million web sites worldwide show images of children being sexually exploited, said the UN investigator on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, Najat M’jid Maalla. …

“The number of images showing serious exploitation quadrupled between 2003 and 2007, showing abject images of brutal rape, bondage, oral sex and other forms of debasement,” Maalla said. She did not give precise figures. …

Over 750,000 people are using child porn sites at any time …

A study by the U.S. National Center on Missing and Exploited Children found 83 percent of people who had child pornography possessed images of children aged 6 to 12 years old, 39 percent had images of children between the ages of 3 and 5, and 19 percent had images of children younger than 3 years old, she said.

How can any adult anywhere think it’s OK to view these images?

I know that viewing the images is a further abuse, but surely the abuse of viewing an image isn’t comparable to actual physical abuse?

Why are we as a society faffing around spending money to block websites instead of using that money to stop the crimes?
