Wait better with WelliBUS

Wellingtonians: find out when your bus is supposed to arrive.

If you live in Wellington then you know that buses are as unpredictable as the weather, earthquakes, and trolley lines. Arrive at a stop at 9.30 to catch the 9.31 bus and you have no way of knowing whether you missed it by a couple of minutes, it’ll come right away or it’ll be 15 to 30 minutes late.

WelliBUS.

The new WelliBUS iPhone application can’t tell you what time the bus will arrive, but at least it can tell you what time it’s supposed to arrive at your stop:

  • Find buses departing from a particular stop number
  • If you don’t know the stop number but you know the street name then you can find all the stop numbers on that street.
  • Find what bus stops are on your street by using the built-in GPS functionality.
  • Ability to search buses departing at a future date.

The application draws its information from metlink.org.nz, but it’s a darned sight easier to use than the Metlink website.

The stop number

All Wellington bus stops now have a stop number on the sign. You may have to squint a bit to see it, as everything else seems to be written larger, but that number lets you discover when the bus is due.

Enter the number into WelliBUS, or search by a street name and choose from possible numbers. WelliBUS returns the scheduled time of the next bus.

I haven’t experimented with the GPS function yet, but it’s a nice addition.

Oh, and WelliBUS is free.

So now you can wait better at any stop, whether it has a timetable or not.
