Ruby Blues

Lisa Tomlins was the highlight of a Blues night at the Ruby Lounge.

Last night we went to the Ruby Lounge for a night of music: Big Girls’ Blues.

Big Girls Blues.

Big Girls Blues.

The outstanding highlight for me was Lisa Tomlins singing with Darren Watson & The Real Deal Blues Band.

I found her performance very enjoyable. She has a great voice and a relaxed and engaging stage presence and manner.

The video below is from a different event (that I didn’t attend), but gives you an idea of her abilities. The video is pretty shoddy, so just listen to the sound for most enjoyment.

Apparently Lisa has sung with Hollie Smith, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Rhombus and others.

The band she sang with were clearly very professional, and the two together were a lot of fun.

Another high point was some excellent guitar playing from (I think) Bill Lake of the Windy City Strugglers. He was supporting Marg Layton in her set.

I’d love to hear more from the Tomlins & Real Deal combo.

Lisa Tomlins appears on the “Shapeshifter Live” album, which is one of my favourites.
