Cruise or Navy?

It’s a busy Harbour today in Wellington. 3 Navy vessels and a huge cruise ship.

With summer coming on (soon, I hope) it’s cruise ship season in Wellington.

When I walked the dogs today I spotted the Sun Princess cruise ship berthed near the Stadium.

They dock down in the industrial section, down amongst all the logs destined for export. Then buses carry the 2,000 or so passengers around town and off into the countryside.

A full schedule (PDF) of all the season’s cruise ship arrivals is available at the CentrePort website. There are 59 between 17 October 2010 and 05 April 2011, including the new Queen Elizabeth on 19 February 2011 (apparently).

20% of the Navy

It seems New Zealand has 13 navy vessels: two frigates, two support vessels, three survey and diving support vessels, and 6 patrol vessels.

Naval vessels: HMNZS Taupo - P3570, Inshore Patrol Vessel; HMNZS Otago - P148, Offshore Patrol Vessel; HMNZS Te Kaha - F77, ANZAC class frigate.

Today 3 of them are tied up in Wellington: one frigate, and one each inshore and offshore patrol vessels.

My photo shows the frigate, Te Kaha, at the back, with the smaller offshore vessel, HMNZS Otago, beside it and the smallest inshore vessel, HMNZS Taupo, in front of both.

Again the CentrePort website provides details, though that part of the site is all tied up in Flash and hard to access and use.

A friend mentioned that Wellington was full of Navy personnel today. Three ships accounts for that.
