I’m used to closing my window with the Close Box in the top left corner, windowshading it or zooming it with the controls in the top right. On the rare occasions when I use Windows, all three controls are in the top right corner.
OS X puts all three in the top left as a red button, an orange button and a green button, as seen from left to right. Red will close, orange minimises — this is similar to windowshading, but apparently behaves more like the minimise in Windows. Green maximises.
The buttons are simply colour coded without an icon, until you hover the cursor over them. At that time an x, – or + become visible.
