This couldn’t claim to be a Kiwi blog if I didn’t mention that today is the 50th anniversary of Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reaching the Summit of Mt Everest. From Tenzing-Norgay.com: May 29 1953: Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reach the summit of Mt Everest. By 1953, Norgay had probably spent more time on Mt. Everest than any other human being. Symbolically as well as literally, Tenzing on Everest was a man against the sky, virtually the first humbly born Asian in all history to attain world stature and world renown. Oh, and with Everest actually being in Nepal, it’s local name is apparently Sagarmatha. [29th? 30th? There’s a timezone in there.]
