On going out yesterday to teach an evening class I found the road was blocked right where our footpath comes out. A car was on its roof and across the road. Everyone was safe it seemed, with no injuries – rather remarkable considering what had happened.
Our neighbour was driving away and had left her two very young children alone in the car for one moment while she ran back into the house for something. The two-year old found her way out of the seatbelt and somehow released the handbrake. The car rolled downhill, up against the bank and flipped onto its roof.
When the car landed it smashed the rear window of another neighbour’s parked car – a window which had been broken in an apparent break-in only last week (and repaired).
This sure is an accident-prone street! I feel the mixed emotions of concern and sympathy for the neighbours and relief that for once my car wasn’t the victim of the damage.
