A new client has a very nice new flat-panel iMac, Safari and uses a Hotmail account. He asked for my help in printing an electronic ticket which had been emailed to him. We visited Hotmail, clicked on “download attachment”, entered a password and got precisely nowhere. We tried various workarounds and then I went searching. I soon turned up various discussion threads which then led me to the “MacOS X HTTP Mail Plugin: A plugin for the MacOS X Mail application that adds the ability to fetch mail stored on a httpmail (Hotmail) server.” I’m looking forward to seeing my client next week and trying it out.
What we did while I was there was to forward the emails to his (new) email address with his ISP, collect them with Mail.app and print.I should have thought to tell him to try Internet Explorer, but didn’t at the time. However, in real life, these things which seem easy for many of us are in fact very hard for new users.
