This year, just for a change, Wellington’s doing “Summer”. Over the past few weeks we’ve had a high number of warm, even hot, sunny summer days, often with cloudless blue skies. This is a wonderful change from the past few years where it’s been grey and miserable right up until after Christmas.
This morning I had an appointment in Island Bay and as usual cut across town to get there, while avoiding the “rush hour” traffic at 8.30. Actually, what does one call Rush Hour when it lasts more like 15 minutes? In fact yesterday I’d driven right through it and out the other side before I remembered it was rush hour. That darn queue of traffic at the bottom of Marjoribanks Street takes literally minutes to get through the traffic lights at 8.30 am.
Anyway, after my appointment I decided to drive home round the South Coast bays and it reminded me just how splendid Wellington can be on days like this. Stunningly blue water, bush-clad hills, almost empty roads. I almost felt tempted to drive right around the peninsula, it was so beautiful, but work does beckon.
