Given the amount of coastline around Wellington city it’s surprising there aren’t more eateries which take advantage of it. One exception though is the Chocolate Fish over in Scorching Bay, around the peninsula.
Scorching Bay is a very popular family beach with great swimming. The cafe there isn’t too far from Weta Studios and apparently used to do great trade with Peter Jackson’s crowd. It’s certainly expanded a lot over the last few years, and is the only cafe I know with a road running right through its middle. Some tables are indoors, others are under an awning just outside and there are a dozen more tables across the road directly beside the beach.
We took friends there for brunch today. Not only was the food excellent, but the staff were very prompt in serving and clearing, and unbelievably friendly. The staff are distinctive because of their fluorescent yellow safety vests, for crossing the road.
This is also one of the rare cafes that welcomes dogs. They have dog hitching posts with water bowls and all dogs get a free dog biscuit while their owners eat. Our dog’s going on 15 now and doesn’t enjoy such outings any more, but it’s very pleasant to be able to breakfast with the dogs. We spotted one Huntaway at the table next to us scoring a few free morsels from the kitchen. Those patrons looked to be regulars and the waiting staff certainly knew the dog. [Note for non-Kiwis: the Huntaway is a sheepdog known for its voice. While an eye dog will run around sheep and stare at them to make them go where the shepherd wants them the Huntaway uses its voice.]
