On Sunday evening as we drove home from Petone we spotted a dome being inflated just by Te Papa and the supermarket, on the borders of the almost finished Waitangi Park. This dome’s huge and white and obviously connected to the NZ International Arts Festival 2006 that’s about to start.
Artistic Director Carla Van Zon describes to us her experience of the Dome going up for The New Zealand Post Season of Les Arts Sauts on Sunday and the company in general.
“It came out of the containers at about 11.30am on Sunday. First they had to prepare the space and the equipment. They started blowing it up at 8pm and by 8.45pm it was up. Just like that. It was quite hard against the wind and they made sure they did it on Sunday night as they knew that those strong winds were coming on Monday.
It pays to keep your eyes open in any city, but in Wellington just now there’s so much going on that you need to make sure you look in every direction. Yesterday while walking along the waterfront to a meeting I spotted these trapeze artists down by the lagoon. I only had my cellphone with me, so the snaps aren’t the best, but what fun!
