Venus was bright in the East when I got up about 6.15 this morning so I took my binoculars out onto the deck for a look. Of course some light cloud came across precisely then, but I was able to check out Venus, nearby Uranus, Mercury and Neptune and the just-past-full moon. Apart from Venus and the Moon, I know that’s what I must have been seeing, thanks to trusty Stellarium.
I could hear a bit of general background traffic hum, but once the 6.15 jet had headed north and the rescue helicopter had settled at the hospital I could hear a couple of tui, one to the northeast of me, the other to the southwest, singing a subtle duet.
One would start to chortle, and like an echo, a moment later, the other would sing the same sequence.
Unfortunately, then, the other birds started waking too, squeaking and chirping. The tui duet was swamped.
It was a special moment. I’m so glad I caught it.
