I’d forgotten about the ‘Goodnight Kiwi‘, the animation that used to play when TV 2 stopped broadcasting each night at about midnight. And I’m not sure if the good old milk bottle still exists anywhere in New Zealand either.
The days seem long past when TV wasn’t 24 hours a day, when there were only one or two channels on TV and when the milkman delivered milk in bottles to the doorstep.
The Goodnight Kiwi was an animated short used to signal the end of the nightly broadcast on Television New Zealand channels, before they went 24hrs. It aired from 1980/81 till October 19, 1994. It’s a classic. Also the song playing is an instrumental arrangement of traditional Māori song, “Hine e Hine”, composed by Fannie Rose Howie (1868-1916) in 1905.
