I’ve been hearing and seeing diggers and other machinery up the hill for the last day or two. At long last the Mt Victoria Summit Upgrade is getting underway:
As well as the new toilets, a less “bunker-like” viewing platform with transparent sides and new railing is planned, along with improved signage, more seating and better lighting. The pathway will be realigned and a lower viewing area created around the Byrd Memorial. More pedestrian areas will be created by changes to the layout of the car parks and bus pull-in areas. The area will be landscaped with coastal native plants.
The improved information signs will cover Maori stories about Wellington, the history of the Town Belt, the city’s major earthquake faultlines and the memorials that are in the area.
