The other day while my friend was buying her iPod I strolled around Harvey Norman looking at computer stuff. For years now I’ve used a RoadTools Coolpad beneath my MacBook Pro to help keep both my lap and the computer cool.
As summer comes on though I’ve been finding I still get too hot, and anyway 3 of the 4 rubber feet have melted off and I’ve become a little bored with the Coolpad. For a while now I’ve been considering finding another solution.
In the store my eye fell on the Targus Notebook Cooling Chill Mat™. The image on this post is from their product page.
The Targus Chill Mat protects your lap & workspace from notebook heat, while cooling fans help maximise notebook performance by supplying cool air to the notebook.
Those fans sounded appealing. The Chill Mat comes with a small cable that plugs into a USB port on the computer to power the fans when you need an extra boost of cool air. At other times you can leave out the plug (or use the on/off switch) to keep the laptop separated from your lap by about an inch, with ventilation space allowing the heat to escape.
My 15 inch MacBook Pro and my MacBook both sit very securely on the rubber feet intended for the laptop, and the Chill Pad is perfectly comfortable on my lap.
The device is extremely lightweight and also raises the computer up a little higher than I’ve been used to, which is working out fine.
I’ve switched the fans on a couple of times over the last few days and they certainly seem to cool things down quite effectively. The fans are quite noisy, but I find that if I want the extra cooling somehow the noise helps me feel as though the fans are doing their job and chilling is taking place.
I’m pretty happy with my purchase so far and especially so since the price turned out to be only about 75% of what was on the sticker. I think that $65 was an investment.
