Sometimes I take the dogs for an early walk on Lyall Bay, as was the case yesterday. We had a good time too.
While we were walking a fellow walker came from the other direction and stopped to chat. She let me know there was a freshly washed-up dead shark, further down the beach in the no-dog zone. Funnily enough I’d thought on leaving the house that I should take my camera with me, but for various reasons I’d left it behind.
Once our walk was finished I stowed the dogs in the car and drove down to the Maraenui Surf Club, where I took to the beach alone. After a few moments I located the shark, cleaned up the cellphone’s camera lens and grabbed a few crummy shots, some of which are here.
I’m hopeless at estimating sizes and distances, but this shark was probably about a metre long. This may well be the first shark I’d ever seen — unless I’d seen some at Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World in Auckland many years ago … I was struck by it’s aqua coloured eyes. They looked for all the world like glass marbles. These photos are so crummy its hard to see how marble-like they looked, but it’s interesting how scary they are.
