A couple of weeks ago, as we left dog training class, I discovered that there’d been a giant in the room, but somehow I hadn’t noticed him.
Strauss the Leonberger had been waiting quietly for his brother, a Husky, to finish training. Strauss is about 16 months old, and enormous. Today his owner kindly let me grab a couple of quick shots with my cameraphone.
I’d never even heard of a Leonberger before, though apparently there are several in Wellington*.
Wikipedia tells us:
The breed’s name derives from the city of Leonberg in south-west Germany. … Heinrich Essig, a dog breeder and seller from Leonberg in southwestern Germany, originally bred the Leonberger from the Newfoundland (the Landseer type, with black/white marks), Saint Bernard, and Pyrenean Mountain Dog in the early 1800s
