both Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphin face imminent extinction. We can submit comments by 24 October 2007 that may give them a small chance.
Now they have that chance. Radio New Zealand News reports Tough new measures to protect dolphins:
The Government has announced new measures to protect Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins.
Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton says the changes will include regional bans and other restrictions on set netting, trawling and drift netting in coastal waters where the dolphins are most often found.
There are an estimated 7,200 Hector’s Dolphins and 111 Maui’s Dolphins – some of the world’s rarest species.
