A colleague on a mailing list complained about long lines of text and having to scroll sideways.
You can see the problem in the screenshot above: I’ve already scrolled sideways a bit and yet the text just keeps going to the right. This kind of thing is so annoying, and yet there’s such an easy fix.
This particular problem occurred when I was viewing the source of a page using Firefox, but it happens with text editors too sometimes.
The fix is simple: turn on wrapping. It forces the text to wrap to the edge of the window (usually with a bit of a margin). However wide or narrow you make the window the text will always stop at the right edge and flow down to the next line.
Even if you turn on wrapping, sometimes a software update or a new Operating System can bring amnesia. If lines of text go on and on, check the settings for the software where you have the problem.
In Firefox it’s under the View menu. In other programs you may need to check the Preferences or Settings.
