Normally, if you want to know what version of WordPress your blog is running you need only look at the Dashboard. In the bottom right corner of any Dashboard page is the number of the version you’re using.
The (enlarged) screenshot shows that my MacTips archive is running Version 2.8.4.
Several months ago though I started to move MacTips to a new server. For various reasons I didn’t complete that job at the time, and didn’t actually finish installing the software. That means I can’t check the version on the new server through the Dashboard.
I know I need to upgarde WordPress before I complete the install and start moving the files, but I’d like to know what’s already there.
Check via FTP
It’s not a problem though, as the version number is stored in a file called
Use FTP to list the contents of your blog’s
wp-includes folder. Then open
version.php with your text editor.
At around Line 11 you’ll see something like this:
$wp_version = '2.7.1';. That tells me I installed version 2.7.1 of WordPress.
That’s way behind the current Version 2.8.4. I think my best course of action will be to delete what I already uploaded and start fresh.
