Yet another excellent iPhone app has come out of Orsome Software recently. It’s the TVNZ app, which:
…lists the latest headlines for news and sports and lets you choose one of many categories to drill down through. Some stories have photo galleries that you can flick through too. The EPG and Weather pages are pretty handy for a quick overview, and the podcast area is pretty darned whizzy.
Its a free app, and its available worldwide on the appStore today.
I downloaded it to my iPod touch and had a quick look, and then to my iPhone where I almost instantly found myself watching an episode of the Media 7 show that we don’t get on Telstra cable TV. It played well, using the wireless network at home.
Aside: while finding the link for Media 7 I’ve discovered I could watch shows via the web or podcast too… I just don’t pay that much attention to TV any more.
On both devices I had some trouble selecting Wellington as the area for weather forecasts. On both devices the app just silently quit after my initial selection, and it was only on the second or third try that my choice ‘worked’.
It may be that I needed to wait a few moments for the individual areas to load data, or maybe it was that on my last try I selected the default of Auckland before selecting Wellington.
One tiny thing annoys me slightly: I can’t seem to get rid of the Sport button at the bottom of the app. I never care about sport and would rather replace that button with something else, or even move it to a less prominent position. There doesn’t seem to be any way to set preferences though.
Similarly, I’d rather have the Technology section more prominent in the News area. I currently have to scroll through Business, Entertainment and Politics, none of which I care about, to reach it.
Still, I guess the guys at Orsome had to leave something for the next version…
My all-round judgement after a short while of use is that this is an excellent app, and one I’ll use frequently. Thanks Orsome and TVNZ.
