I learned to drive way back in 1970 at the age of 15. In those days, from memory, if you were turning right you gave way to pretty much everyone.
Then in 1977 the rule was changed. If you were turning right but the driver from the opposite direction was turning left they had to give way to you.
Sometimes something deep in my brain leads me to forget it was changed, so I quite often try to give way to someone who should give way to me.
two of the give way rules are changing. These changes come into effect at 5am on Sunday 25 March 2012. Until then the current give-way rules apply.
These changes will affect all drivers, riders, pedestrians and cyclists. Make sure you know the new rules so you’ll know what to do.
This helpful video explains who gives way to whom.
I wish they’d also change one of the ‘unwritten’ rules that seems to apply to those driving on Mt Victoria: big cars, such as SUVs, have right of way at all times and everyone else must give way or else.
But I guess there’s no hope of that one being changed.
