I was making juice today: 2 green Granny Smith apples, 2 New Zealand navel oranges, a few sticks of celery and a punnet of strawberries.
As I cut into one of the oranges I noticed an almost microscopic pip and suddenly realised: I’m sure when I was younger oranges all had pips. They were annoying, but there they were. How long has it been since I saw a pip in an orange? Where have all the pips gone?
And on the topic of oranges: the best I’ve ever eaten are when I was travelling in Spain. Fresh Valencia oranges: gorgeous. And for juice making I try to buy only New Zealand oranges, which are delicious. Sometimes there are only Australian oranges available, or imports from the USA. I find both tasteless and disappointing.
And today’s juice? Yum.
